What Is A Rake Race
For those that don’t know a rake race is basically a competition, between players, to see who can generate the most rake over any given period of time. Everything counts tournaments, sit and go’s as well as cash games and the player who has raked the most at the end of race period is award top prize. There are usually prizes for players who finish in the top x amount of places as well. The higher you finish the bigger prize on offer.
For Example:
Once we were running a rake race for all of our players who signed up at Doyles Room (which is USA friendly). We’ve put a total prize pool of $30,000 on the line which will be paid out to the top 200 rakers over the course of the month. The player to finish top of the rake race leaderboard will take down $4,000 in prize money.

How To Win A Rake Race
Winning rake races isn’t that easy but if you’re a high volume and dedicated player then you certainly have a shot at any of the rake races we have on offer. Below is a list of tips which will help you win any rake race.
1) Develop a schedule – At the start of the rake race you need to develop a schedule which you’ll stick to throughout the month. You need dedicated time to playing poker and time away from the table as well but what you really need to do is get into a routine. Try to look at the previous months rake race stats to help you work out how much time at the tables you’ll need to schedule in to get right up at the top of the leaderboard. Once you’ve done this and got into a playing routine you’ll find it a lot easier to put in the volume needed to win a rake race.
2) Avoid tilting – If you’re going to try and win a rake race then you’ll probably find that you need to play a higher volume of poker than you’re used to. Not only will you need to stay sharp for longer periods of time but you’ll need to avoid tilting for longer periods of time as well. Going on tilt and playing whilst titled for hours chasing one of the top spots on any rake race leaderboard is never good idea.
3) Get off to a good start – One of the best ways to crush any opponents when you’re in a rake race is to get off to a good start. If you can blaze away at the beginning and open up a big lead not only will you be able to take your foot off the pedal a bit towards the end of the month but the players that are behind you will likely give up the chase making it even easier for you to claim number 1 spot. Put distance between yourself and the field early and you’ll find you won’t have to play as much as you would if it’s a close race.
4) Choose the right games – If you’re a lowball poker player as opposed to a no limit Holdem player then you really are going to struggle to get hands in and get your amount raked up. You really need to be playing no limit Holdem or pot limit Omaha to stand a chance of winning any rake race.
