Main Differences between Different Kinds of Hold’em Poker Explained

Texas Hold’em tournament is one of the major kinds of poker tournaments which are played in a lot of international events. The format comes with a lot of variations, which mainly depend on the betting strategies. Given below are the major kinds of Texas Hold’em poker playing formats.

Limit Texas Hold’em

Limit or Fixed Limit tournaments are the major kind of Texas Hold’em variations. The main feature of this kind of poker is that the betting limit for every round is fixed. Each round has minimum and maximum betting limits and the players have to bet within the limits. These limits are set by the casino and can vary from one round to another. The big blind value is fixed and the small blind is half the value of the big blind. Betting is done in multiples of the big blind. For example, if the limit in the game is given as $8/16, then betting is limited to $8 in the initial couple of rounds, the small blind is fixed at $4 and following the flop, limits for betting are raised to $16. Both the initial betting limit and the limit after the flop are listed as in the above mentioned example.

No limit Texas Hold’em

Another very popular format of the game is No limit Texas Hold’em poker. As the name indicates, this format is the opposite of the above mentioned Limit poker. Participants can bet any amount of money. This flexibility in betting has made it quite popular and the format is favored by several casinos. The bet has to be raised over the minimum limit. There is no maximum limit for betting and players can bet all the chips that are in his possession as well. The minimum bet varies and equals the previous bet value. When a player wishes to re-raise his bet, he should put in a bet which is equal to the previous raise. Here is an example. Suppose the bog blind is set at $4 and value has been raised to $8 making the total bet $12, then a player wishing to re-raise has to bet at least $8 more than $12, which ends up being $20. In this manner, a player can go on raising his bet up to any level.

Pot Limit Texas Hold’em

Pot limit games follow the same betting criteria as No Limit games. However, in this format, a player cannot raise the table indefinitely. A limit is set for the game and all bets have to remain within the cap. For example, if the limit set on the table is $500, players have to make their maximum bets within this limit.

Spread Limit

Spread Limit poker is a relatively less popular concept of the game. In this format, a spread is given that works as a guide for betting. A player can bet any amount of money within the given spread range. In a way, this format is similar to limit poker. Usually, a range such as $5 – $20 is given. This indicates that players can bet as per their convenience as long as the bet is within this range. Although there are casinos that play this format, it is mainly used in Stud Poker and in games that play with seven cards.

Besides these formats, there are a few other types which depend on betting strategies. Re-Buy in format is one kind in which players who are eliminated can buy more chips and enter the game. Turbo Texas Hold’em is the format which progresses very fast and is very aggressive. Blinds are huge and players usually are forced to go all out to bet.
