Omaha Poker Explained

Omaha Poker, known as Omaha hold’em or Omaha is a community poker game that is quite similar to Texas Hold’em. In this article from Poker Rakeback Online we have have a look at the rules of the different versions of omaha. Each player is given four cards, while 5 community cards are placed on the table. The community cards are placed face up and can be shared by all the players. The player must make the best hand by combining exactly two of his own cards and exactly three community cards. The word “Omaha” is used to refer to various poker games in North America. The original game is known as Omaha High. Another version is known as Omaha Hi-Lo, where the pot is split between the high and the low players. In Europe, it is the high version of the game played “pot-limit”. Pot- limit Omaha (PLO) is found in various online as well as land-based casinos.

For the game of Omaha Hi-Lo, each player is required to make one 5 card high hand and one 5 card low hand.
The pot is divided between the high hand and the low hand. To be eligible for a low hand, the player must be able to make a hand of 8-7-6-5-4 or a lower value set.
This is probably why the game is also called ‘8 or better’ or just Omaha 8.
In case there is no qualifying hand, the whole pot goes to the high hand winner.
In other words, he is said to have “scooped” the pot.
The fixed limit version of Omaha is more popular, although the pot limit Omaha 8 is slowly gaining acceptance.

At Poker tables in casinos, a plastic marker known as the “dealer button” is placed in front of the player taking the first seat at the table to indicate the dealer for the game.
This button is moved clockwise after each game so that each player gets the opportunity to place blind bets.
Card distribution as well as betting begins on the left of the dealer.
Players are dealt four cards each, face down.
After that, the dealer deals 5 community cards face up on the table, placed in a single row.

The play begins in Omaha High by posting the blind bets.
A “Small Blind” is placed by the person to the immediate left of the dealer, which is usually equal to half the minimum bet.
Next, the player two seats to the left of the dealer must place the “Big Blind” equivalent to the minimum bet.
The cards will now be dealt to each player.
Then the person on the left of the big blind will begin the opening betting round.
He can call, raise or fold the hand.
This process moves clockwise round the table with the players choosing to call, raise or fold their hand.

The player on the left of the “Big blind” begins the first betting round by choosing to bet, raise or fold.
The remaining players can call, that is, bet the same amount as the previous player, raise or fold.
In case the first player decides to fold, the next one can bet while the rest of them can call.
The initial betting round is set at a lower limit.
For instance, in the $10/$20 game, the bet value will be $10 while the raise will be equal to the call of the earlier bet plus an added bet which would be $20.

The second round of betting follows after the flop, that is, after the first 3 community cards are dealt.
Here too, the player on the left of the dealer can bet, check, raise or fold.
Checking or refraining from betting is allowed only if until then no bet has been made in that betting round.
If a bet has already been made, the players can only call or raise or fold.
Bets are limited to the lower limit stakes like in the first round.

When the fourth community card is dealt, it is known as ‘Turn’.
The third round of betting begins after the Turn.
Action begins with the player on the left of the dealer beginning the betting.
In this round, the betting stakes are according to the upper limit of the stake structure.
Again, the following player can call, raise or fold.
He is allowed to check only if no previous bets have been placed.

Finally, the last community card also known as the “river card” is dealt.
The last betting round begins with the player on the left of the deal button betting, checking, raising or folding his hand. In the final round, the bets are placed according to the maximum stake.
The rest of the players can call, raise or fold.
Any players remaining at this stage must use two of their own cards to combine with three community cards to make the hand.
This is the final showdown.
If two or more than two players show the same hand, the pot is split between them, equally.

Variations in Omaha High are usually defined by the betting limits.
In Limit Omaha High, there is a specific betting limit for each game as well as for each round.
In Pot Limit Omaha High, the player can bet whatever amount is in the pot, while the No Limit Omaha High allows the player to bet all his chips at any time.

Playing Omaha Hi-Lo requires you to be aware of the basic rules and strategy of the game.
Here, the winner of the high hand must divide the pot with the best low hand.
In this game, there will always be a high hand winner, but there may not always be a low hand winner.
Another important fact to bear in mind is that there is a huge difference in profits when you win half the pot and when you “scoop” a pot.
Scooping a pot earns you twice as much because there is usually a healthy increase in your chip stacks.
Winning half a pot means you have only a minor increase in your initial stack of chips.
Omaha is said to be a game of “nuts” which means it requires the best possible high hand or the best possible low hand to win.
With so many cards in the hands of so many players, there is always a chance of being beaten by better hands at the final showdown.
If you are not sure of a good hand after the flop or the turn, it is best to fold and wait for the next hand.

When it comes to playing Omaha Poker online, I can highly recommend the action packed games at Sega Online Poker.
Now lets take a look at the Mind Games in Poker.

Gaining the mental edge over your opponents means that they will create a sense of fear within their minds when they come to facing up against you at the tables.

If executed well a strong psychological game can lead to a profitable poker session because of the winning edge and statistics that you can create when you couple up the mind games with strong poker strategy.

Playing a psychological game means that you first have to practice how you are going to inflict a sense of mind strength over each and every opponent that you have seated at your table.

With this, a player may have to alter their mind games in accordance with the level and capabilites of their rival players because in an hour long poker session at a real money ring table, a player is likely to encounter a number of different players who each have their own capabilities as a player, as well as their own weaknesses.

Learning to both counter and use these strengths and weaknesses means that you are in a position where you are able to minipulate how a player may think before they act on a hand.

Successfully installing the fear into opponents will mean that they will think long and in depth before placing their stake into the central pot due to the fear that you could well be holding a more powerful hand and after all no poker player should look to place a bet into a pot if they feel that their hand is inferior to that of their opponent.

Perfecting a psychological poker stance is something that should be seen as a more advanced style of play due to the success rate of this style being shown to be significantly less at a lower level of play than a game that features a $100 minimum buy in.

Any stakes that are below this amount often are played by either new and inexperienced players or players who have mastered the basics of the game but still have a lot to learn in terms of advanced poker strategy.

Trying to use this playing stance within the lower stakes just simply won’t work due to the level of players who will be seated alongside you.

A player who has a slack or weak understanding of the game is less subjective to being influenced by your mind games because they are so focused on how they are going to scare you out of a pot with the use of a bluff that they will fail to fall into a mind game enforced playing style.

Although it would seem that this level of player would be easier to execute your games on, looking at their lack of knowledge and understanding of the game reveals that in fact it will be yourself who is subjective to poor play because they have unknowingly drawn you into making unthought decisions and actions.

Opponents are able to be categorized into a level of poker player by yourself and so the first few hands should be taken lightly and passively as you look for players to offer you information through the way that they play.

So what categories can we place players into to determine how best to approach them when facing up against them?

1. Fish Poker Player

The term fish is used when describing opponents who are happy to invest a large amount of their chips while they are chasing a draw of some kind, this could be a flush or a straight draw.

Players who fall into this category don’t tend to spend their time at the poker tables that offer a larger stake, anything over a minimum $100 buy in because players at these stakes often have a better understanding of the game.

Should you find that you are fortunate enough to be able to categorize the player within this grouping, you should know that their playing mentality is firmly set on how they are going to play their hand and would not consider any aspect of your game.

2. Weak – Tight Poker Player

Weak – Tight players are another category of player that tends to keep a closed mentality when it comes to playing their hands.

This style of poker player will be looking to wait for a strong and powerful hand before they are willing to stake a large amount of chips into a central pot and so the best way to approach your play against a player like this is to bet large amounts and frequently.

3. The Sheriff at the Poker Table

This category of player is regularly seen at the tables that feature minimum buy ins of $100 or more because so many players feel that this is one of the best way to approach their play.

The category is named due to the players tendency to keep players honest, meaning that they are likely to call your bets because they feel that you are bluffing after analysing your playing style.

4. Tight – Aggressive Poker Player

Tight – Aggressive players are seen as the sort of players who have managed to gain a good understanding of the game on a number of different levels, creating a completely rounded player.

These players will look to only play strong hands and will play them aggressively, placing large bets into the pot while secretly looking for action from their opponents.

Facing off against a player like this should be done with extreme caution as this sort of player is the sort that will be able to exploit holes within you game should you lose your strict poker strategy.

These players will be looking to alter the pace of their play but only if they are holding strong hands, they could slow play a pocket pair of aces or raise the action with as little as Ace – Queen suited.

If you are able to counter their hand with the nuts then this sort of player is great to play against, let them do the betting and as long as you still offer the nuts at the river get yourself all in. They will call.

5. Hyper Aggressive Poker Player

This form of player can prove to be a nightmare to play against, they will attack all the pots with a sense of strength and are only too happy to increase the betting by over 10 times the big blind on a hand that isn’t as strong as a high pocket pair.

Keeping a level playing mentality will prove to be very profitable against such a player as they will be looking to increase the central pot at any given opportunity and adapting to only playing powerful hands will prove to be a great boost to your bankroll.

6. Poker Players on Tilt

These are considered to be the best players to find at your table, the players who have lost their poker playing mentality and are out for revenge after losing a pot that could have cost them dearly.

Their play will become desperate and they will look to play hands that should not be considered even if heads up, meaning that you have the opportunity to pour more pain on them with good, strong poker strategy.

Exploit these players and make sure that you keep them on the back foot so you are able to keep them on the edge… Keep at them until they finally leave the game a large amount down.

I hope you enjoyed this insight to the mind games in poker.

No Limit Texas Hold’em – The Basics

Knowing poker hand rankings and deposit methods aren’t going to help you much as a new player unless you know the basic rules of the game.
Luckily for you, they’re simple.
You don’t need to be a rocket scientist to play online poker games.
In your future career, you’ll begin to see that the game’s strategy can be as infinitely complex as you want to make it- but in order to become a master, you have to start from the bottom.
In this article we will will cover the basics of Texas Holdem.

Basic Structure

A plastic dealer button moves around the table, clockwise, as a way of indicating position and blinds.
The blinds in Hold’em are enforced bets, and there are two- the small blind and the big blind, and these are always predefined by the game’s stakes.
For example, a game of $1/2 Hold’em will have a small blind of $1, and a big blind of $2.
The player to the left of the button must post the small blind, and the player two left of the button must post the big blind.
The player “under the gun” positioned three spots to the left of the button (directly left of the big blind) always begins betting action in the first round, and the player in the small blind begins betting action in future rounds.
Bet sizing in No-Limit Hold’em is unrestricted, save one rule- all bets on all streets must be at least the size of the big blind.

Preflop: Each player is dealt two hole cards face-down. Each must evaluate the strength of their two-card hand, and a round of betting ensues.
The player in the small blind leads out the action, and may check (continue with no bet), bet, or fold.
The action moves clockwise, ending with the player on the button or the remaining player closest to the right of the button.
If a player bets, others have the option to fold their hand, to call the bet, or to raise the bet.
If there is more than one player left in action after the preflop betting, the hand continues.
Otherwise, the original bettor wins the pot.

Flop: Three community cards are dealt face-up.
Any player can use these cards, as well as their own hole cards to make a five-card poker hand.
A round of betting follows the deal, much like preflop.
More than one player is required for action to continue after this round.

Turn: One community card is dealt face-up.
A round of betting follows.
Unless there are less than two players left, action continues.

River: The final community card is dealt face-up, followed by the last round of betting.
If more than one player is left, and both remain in the hand after this round of betting, players enter a showdown.

Showdown: If there are players left at this point, both or all must evaluate the strength of their final poker hands, using any combination of their own hole cards and the community cards.
Players compare strengths, and the player with the highest ranked poker hand wins the pot.
The player who initiated the betting on the river is usually the first to show his hand- if the players after them realize they are beaten, they can throw away their hole cards without showing and surrender the pot.
This is known as “mucking” a hand.

Long story short, you don’t want to get to the river with the worst hand when you play online poker!
Now that you’ve got a handle on the rules of No Limit Hold’em, it’s time to immerse yourself in some poker strategy.
You’re on your way, and with some hard work you’ll be winning in no time!

First we should look at what placing a bet into the central pot means in terms of playing poker and what it says to your opponents.

A bet is a declaration that you either are holding what you feel is the better hand or that you feel that you are holding the best hand out of a number of weaker hands held by your opponents.

Generally when playing a game of poker, players are meant to bet when they have a strong hand and fold when they are holding a set of cards of either low strength or no strength.

This general rule is unwritten and over the previous number of years while the game has become more and more popular across the world, players have developed a form of betting that means that they are offering the impression that they are holding a strong hand when in fact they aren’t.

In order to know when it is best to place a bet into the pot, following these tips would mean that you would have a better understanding of what you are about to get yourself into by placing the bet and including yourself within the hand.

Blind Stealing

Blind stealing is a term that is given to a form of betting that sees a player making a large raise while they are not within the force betting positions, also known as the ‘Blinds’.

The best position to make such a play would be if you were ‘on the button’, a term given to the player who represents the dealer in the hand.

This means that you are the last player to act before the betting action makes its way into the ‘blind’ positions. The advantage of playing from this position at the table is that you get the opportunity to see how many players are wanting to involve themselves within the action.

If you are thinking about making a ‘blind stealing‘ bet, the greatest chance that a player who makes this kind of play would be if there were no players who have acted before them have signaled an interest into playing in the hand.

Betting into a pot that already has players who have ‘called’ or ‘raised’ is not recommended if you are looking to make this form of betting as the possibility that you will be ‘called’ or ‘re-raised’ is increased.

Steal – Raise

‘Steal – Raise’ is a term that describes a bet that is placed when the action within the game is passed around the table without any betting taking place before it reaches the player who is last to act.

This is a great position to place a bet into the pot with the impression that you are holding a strong hand at this point in the game.

Although this is a great position to make a steal on a pot that contains a number of players, knowing to read your players is key because failure to recognise when a player is looking to ‘check – raise’ when their previous play has included this form of play could prove costly for you.

The ‘Steal – Raise’ technique is not something that new players should look to play until they have the opportunity to gain a better understanding of that game and the types of players who participate in it.

Check – Raise

‘Check – Raise’ is a form of play that signals a large amount of strength as you are looking for a player to make a bet into the pot so that you can ‘raise’ the stakes over the top of their bet.

This is a great method to help increase the size of a pot that is available but also carries the risk that no player who will act after you will place a bet, giving any players still within the hand the chance to see a ‘free card’.

Giving players the opportunity to see a ‘free card’ increases the opportunity for your opponent to hit a hand that overpowers yours so making sure that you have the best hand possible is highly recommended.

An example of when this would be used is if you were holding ‘pocket aces’ and their is at least one other player still being dealt into the hand. On the flop if an ace is placed onto the ‘community board’, checking the action to another player who give the impression that you are not holding a hand of strength when infact you are holding a ’set of aces’ also known as ‘three of a kind’.

Checking the action around to another player might mean that they feel that they have the opportunity to exercise the ‘Steal – Raise’ bet or leave them feeling that they genuinely have the best hand, leading them to bet into the pot.

In this situation, making a minimum raise would mean that you would get at very least a call but the majority of time players tend to ‘re-raise’ you or to move ‘all in’, giving you a nice heavy central pot to win.

Remember that if a player has already bet into a pot, its highly likely that they are going to call a second bet.

Opener Bet

The term ‘Opener Bet’ is when the first player to act within the hand makes a ‘raise’ into the pot. This means that players who are to act after this player have to call two bets, the first being the original ‘blind’ amount and the second being the amount of the ‘raise’.

This form of play is often used by players who are more likely to ‘bluff’ into an active pot and id widely considered to be regarded as poor play.

The ‘Opener Bet’ is designed to reduce the number of players who are willing to participate within a hand due to the increased amount of stake that they have to offer into the centre to become a part of the action again.

Although this form of betting does seem to offer a good amount of success at reducing the size of number of players who are willing to play the hand, it also means that players who see their hand as a strong one will be more willing to either increase the stake by placing a ‘raise’ or move ‘all in’ so making sure that you have a hand that you are willing to risk your whole stake on as failure to do that could see the player who made the ‘Opener Bet’ originally, have to lay their hand down and with that lose an amount of chips that they could have retained.

Squeezing Bet

This form of bet is most commonly seen in short handed games and is used when a player is holding a good hand but they suspect that one or more of the remaining players is on either a ’straight draw’ or a ‘flush draw’.

An example of when making a ‘Squeeze Bet’ would be used is if you were holding top pair with a high kicker but there are two cards that have been dealt onto the ‘community board’ are of the same suit. This means that there is a chance that any player active within the hand could be holding two more cards that are of that suit.

At this moment in time, the player who is holding two cards of the same suit but have ‘missed’ the cards already on the ‘board’ are currently holding nothing but a ‘flush draw’.

Placing a ‘Squeeze Bet’ means that you wager into the pot with a large bet because at that moment within the hand you are holding what you consider to be the best possible hand.

Playing this bet and making sure that you are placing a large bet into the pot here means that the player who is chasing a flush draw has to decide whether they are going to call your large bet with nothing or if they are going to lay their hand down, so making sure you aim big with your bet is of key significance.

Players should be aware that this form of bet is more likely to be called by players who are sat at a lower stake table than higher stakes due to the fact that the player could be either inexperienced, weak or new to the game and does not yet have a good understanding of the game and the odds that they face.

Also note that players who are ’short staked’ and within the hand also offer an increased amount of possibility of making a call when you make this play.

Big stack poker is a style of poker that gives the general conception that players will be entering a poker table, either live or online at an online poker room, with a large amount of poker chips.

This can offer a great advantage when it comes to poker tournament play because you will have more opportunity to lay down the weaker hands that you are dealt even though the blinds will be still circulating around the table.

The chance to be offered the opportunity to participate in a poker game with additional chips gives players the chance to adapt their game play significantly, including the chance to try to bully other players with their additional poker chips, with the sight of a player having more chips than yourself installs a hint of fear into your decisions when it comes to make important calls.

Remembering that additional chip count opens up your chances of stealing blinds is increased, is very important because every successful poker player takes their opportunity to take chips from their rivals players.

Some big stack players are so blinded by the additional options that an inflated chip stack offers to their game, they often forget to weigh up the negatives and often fall into bad habits and often their playing stance becomes full of bad strategy, costing them both chips and their game life.

Players who find themselves with a large chip stack often find that they are more willing to take risks within their poker play, increasing their chances of making a poor decision when it really matters, resulting in a sharp loss of chips in many instances.

To become a successful and competitive poker player in the world, you need to learn the concept of remaining within the right mind frame in order to reduce the possibility of becoming careless with your play.

Alternatively there are many players out there within the poker scene that instantly fall in love with their poker chips and refuse to make bigger bets in fear of losing them.
Doing this means that the opportunities of being able to scare an opponent out of a pot with a slightly inflated bet is reduced and so the player gives themselves more chance to be beaten within the hand due to their reluctancy to bet big.

The is a happy medium that should be aimed for within this situation, the ability to play the larger hands that you are dealt with a good degree of aggressiveness and the smaller hands that you are dealt folded, leaving you out of the way of players who could be looking to cling onto their life within the game.

Remembering that players with a short stack will be more willing to move all of their chips into the central pot on an all in call with cards that most players would throw back into the dead card pile is important, especially if you are a big stack and you are still to act because they are targetting you and your chip wealth.

Times when you are holding a big stack of chips is when you poker ability is going to be most tested, your resilience to make poor decisions and unthoughtout plays tested and the test of how you handle every player at your table gunning for you tried.

In these situations remain focused, tight and wait for your opportunity to take out your opponents with the right hand.

Fulltiltpoker has some very nice deepstack tournaments where you can try the big stack strategy yourself in a wide range of tournaments with different buyins.
The daily dollar tournament is perfect for new players who are learning the game.
There is a $10.000 guaranteed prizepool, and the buyin is only $1!

Sit and Go poker tournament play creates a new player percentage to fall short of the money at the last hurdle because a high number of these style of poker tournaments feature a small number of players, often between 6 players up to 36 players on many of the larger online poker gambling rooms.

Spending time gambling at the poker tables at some of the biggest online poker rooms, it soon becomes clear to see that there are players who have successfully mastered their approach to this style of tournament as they are consistently placing within the paying positions.

No player wants to experience the feeling of being what is considered to be ‘the bubble player’ because the feeling of coming so close to the paying positions but missing out feels worse than if you had been the first out of the game.

The definition of ‘The Bubble’ is commonly known as the player who exits the tournament in the position that marks the start of the paying positions.
This means that the next player to exit the tournament would mean that they would not gain any financial return for their entry into the tournament as well as also marking the point of where players know that they will be rewarded for their presence within the game.

Seeing ‘The Bubble’ player exit the tournament seems to open the flood gates within the larger player tournaments, signaling to the smaller stacks within the tournament to become more aggressive with their play but within the smaller player tournaments it has the adverse effect, making players tighten their play in a bid to take the first place payout.

The key to avoiding becoming ‘The Bubble’ is to enter into Sit and Go tournaments with a tight stance of play, folding cards that are not considered to be power cards or cards that you would be willing to risk your tournament life on.

Playing a tight game of poker can offer a number of benefits, a couple being that you could see a number of the other players come out aggressive and one player begins to knock others out of the tournament while you sit and watch from behind your stack or it means that when you are willing to enter into a pot, players around you will be more reluctant to make a play towards you unless they have a hand that they feel is strong.

By no means is playing defensive within Sit and Go tournaments a guaranteed way to make the money but they do mean that you are thinking more about the hands that you are willing to play and so things such as ‘Ace-Rag’ will be laid down rather than played.

One thing that a player who was looking to use the defensive stance within Sit and Go tournaments should be aware of is that sometimes the deck will run dry and you will feel that you are throwing your chips away but waiting for the right cards is a must, playing cards you have no trust in will only leave you regretting the way that you have played them.

The last thing that would effect the use of the defensive stance would be the players choice of style of Sit and Go tournament, if you are going to opt to use this method of play you should strongly avoid playing in speed or turbo tournaments that sees the time between levels more than halved.
This is because it will reduce the number of hands that you can lay down in order to wait for the right hand.
